Mista Blackberry Molasses (1996)
In the 1990s, the East Coast and West Coast battled for hip hop supremacy in the US. What initially manifested itself as a cold war of verbal skirmishes ultimately culminated in deadly violence, the most prominent victims of which were Notorious B.I.G. and 2Pac. In the shadow of this media-hyped duel, a new hip hop superpower emerged in the south, led by Organized Noize. The production team was not only responsible for Outkast's international rise, but also worked on global hits such as TLC's “Waterfalls”, En Vogue's “Don't Let Go (Love)”, and Ludacris' “Saturday (Oooh! Ooooh!)”. One of Organized Noize's less commercially successful projects was Atlantan R'n'B boy band Mista, which disbanded soon after their debut album of the same name. The first single, “Blackberry Molasses”, is a heavy and yet somehow conciliatory soul song, a little too musically innovative for its time, appreciated only by a select few, including 2Pac. He died two and a half months after “Blackberry Molasses” was released.
