Sequence of Events Becomings (2024)
The Ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus perceived the world as a ceaseless current in which all things are moving and transforming in an eternal dance of change. To him, existence was a constant state of flux, which means that nothing is permanent and reality an ever-changing mirage.
Around 2,500 years later, in the 1960s, this idea of “flux” found its way into contemporary art and music. Artists like John Cage, George Brecht, George Maciunas or Yoko Ono formed a loose international artist network called “Fluxus.” Art became a verb, something that was “happening.” Consequently, artworks were called “events” or “concerts.”
In 2024, the German visual artists Deniz Ahmet Saridas and Joshua Gottmann formed the band Sequence of Events. According to their bio, their work “embrace[s] the uncertainty and formlessness of a new world.” In a way, Heraclitus knew it all along, and Sequence of Events turned it into song: “Becomings”, a dark update of the classic shoegaze sound, lets us float into the eternal space of impermanence, where time itself seems to dissolve and the boundaries between sound, image and thought blur into one seamless experience.
